3D Modelling Research: Dinosaurs (3) Gertie the Dinosaur (1914)

Gertie the Dinosaur is known as to most people as the world’s most oldest cartoon. It’s the first cartoon to be created using key frame animation. This cartoon required Winsor McCay and his assistant John A.Fitzsimmons (who traced the backgrounds) to create 10,000 drawings which they then inked onto rice paper and then mounted onto cardboard. They is some great detail on some of the key drawings. Most the drawings were given shadows across there body to give a the animals more depth. The intentions of Gertie the Dinosaur were to broaden the horizon of possibilities of animation. This animation signified how animation could be used to tell a story from start to finish. It also was something that hadn’t ever been done before.Gertie (1) Gertie
